Termite Repair Factstermite repairTermites are not good for any structure. In fact, there is no level of termite damage that is acceptable. Because the smallest of smalls can become larger-than-life issues in a very short amount of time. Luckily, however, termite repair itself can be enacted in many degrees of structural damage. As long as the structure hasn’t fallen into disrepair, ridding yourself of termites is possible. This includes when a slightly invasive problem has been discovered.

Discovery

The structure may not show signs of damage at this level, but there will be evidence that termites are present. Look for increased termite droppings and effervescent, irregular trails that appear a milky-white when exposed in the correct lighting. Again, this isn’t evidence that there is a full blown colony about to take over, merely signs that it is time to enact a solution.

Repair

For most cases, you will need to establish the damage that has been caused, and will require a basic set of tools to create an action plan and execute remediation.

Begin by scraping away the top most layer of wood with a chisel to reveal untouched, smooth wood. Then apply a layer of wood filler to remedy any canals and channels caused by the termite. Reinforce the framing with new materials as necessary.

From here it is best to refinish the wood to restore it to its original finish, and “seal” the filler in place to act as a future barrier. Just be sure to follow the directions on the wood filler for optimal performance.

Final Tips

Depending on the season, there will be slight deviations in this practice. For instance during particularly wet times of the year, an area such as the one that has been treated, may again become infested. It is particularly important to keep an eye on any area where protective measures have been put into place to prevent seepage and re-infestation. Wipe the area dry (if wet) to inhibit seepage and moisture build-up. If you have a termite problem, we have a solution for your Oakland home. Please contact us for more on how we can help you.
