However, as fall comes around, termites start to build new colonies, and some continue expanding into the winter.

Drywood vs. Subterranean Termites

In the United States, there are approximately 45 different kinds of species of termites. Most of us think of them as bugs in the ground that pop up to eat our homes. That is not the case for all of them. You may see other kinds, such as the drywood termite. Fall is the time you’ll see them swarm!

Learn how to spot the difference between the two main types of termites we see here. Here are some of the basics between drywood and subterranean termites:

  • Drywood: It is possible to see winged swarmers during the summer and fall months in California. They shed their wings quickly after swarming, so if you see dead bugs without wings, they are likely to be of the drywood variety. These buggers love wood just like their subterranean cousins, but they will build their colony right inside the beam or log they are gnawing away at. Also, since they don’t need the same amount of moisture as others, you can find them eating away at your roof rafters in your attic space.
  • Subterranean: Unlike their air loving counterparts, subterranean termites prefer to skulk about using mud tubes. Not only does it protect them from dehydration but also predators. They love to enter your home from below and start munching away, using your floor joists as an appetizer. When they swarm, generally in the spring, they do not lose their wings as quickly. Thus, if you find dead termites, you may see a mixture with and without wings.
